In Most European Soccer Leagues you do not enter the season guaranteed to be in the same league the following year. It is all based on performance. If you fall to the bottom 2-4 teams you can be relegated to the next league down. Just the same, if you are in a smaller league and you do really well, you can be promoted to play in a better league. The better league comes with more money, more exposure, and the chance to play against the best of the best.
This method allows for any team to rise up and any team to fall down based on on-field performance. I wrote an article on what this system could look like for the world of college football. With College Football 25, we can play it out to see what happens.
As a refresher each division has 11 teams. They will play the 10 teams in their division plus two teams of their choice.
In League 1: Top 3 teams advance to Playoff (plus 2 best WC teams). Bottom 2 in each division compete. Losers are relegated.
(1 Champion, 2 Relegated).
In League 2: Top 2 teams in each division advance to playoff. Top 2 teams get promoted. Bottom 2 in each division compete. Losers are relegated.
(2 Promoted, 4 Relegated).
In League 3: Top 4 teams in each division advance to playoff. Top team in each division get promoted. Bottom 4 in each division advance to loser playoff. Losers are relegated.
(4 Promoted, 4 Relegated).
In League 4 (in the proposed plan there would be 88 teams in here with FCS holding a large percentage of those teams but using only the FBS teams in the game things will be adjusted). Teams are divided into 4 divisions of 6. They will all compete against themselves. The top 2 teams in each division will play for promotion.
(4 Promoted).
Here are the teams in each division (ordered by Preseason FPI):
