Being a Maryland resident for the majority of my life, the University of Maryland has been the Power 4 in-state team to cheer for.
Georgia Tech was led by George O'Leary who hired Ralph Friedgen as his OC. In Ralph Friedgen's 4 seasons as Georgia Tech's OC they won 7+ games every year and finished in the top 25 every year. In 2001, Maryland hired Friedgen as their new HC. In Friedgen's 1st 3 seasons Maryland goes 31-8 finishing in the top 20 every year and making it to a Big 6 Bowl Game. I distinctly remember the 2002 game against Tennessee when Maryland blew out Tennessee.
In Friedgen's next 7 seasons he won 8 or more games three times and lost 7 or more twice. Since firing Friedgen (after going 9-4 in 2010), Maryland has not won more than 8 games in a season (0 times in 13 seasons).
In the 10 seasons following Friedgen's firing Maryland went 43-73 under 5 different HCs winning 0 bowl games, 0 seasons with more than 7 wins, and 5 seasons with at least 8 losses.
In the last three seasons, Mike Locksley has led Maryland to a 23-16 record and has won three straight bowl games with back-to-back 8 win seasons. The last time Maryland had back-to-back seasons with 8 wins was 2002 and 2003.
With no immediate hype to get over that 7-8 win hump, it is time to bring Maryland to that level and rebuild that program for their first national championship since 1953.
