Having grown up in the Annapolis area (where my dad has had season tickets to Navy home games since 1991). I have been able to see a wide array of Navy football seasons from the Charlie Weatherbie era, the Paul Johnson era, the Ken Niumatololo era and the brand new Brian Newberry era.
I have seen 0-10 seasons with 70-7 home losses to Georgia Tech, a 2-30 stretch, as well as four 10 win seasons, 3rd quarter leads against future champions Ohio State, beating #6 Houston at home, nearly beating #2 Cincinnati at home, come from behind Air Force wins, 14 straight wins against Army, and more. But the last four seasons have resulted in at least 7 losses every season so it is time for a rebuild.
A brief history of Navy football since 1991 includes the Charlie Weatherbie days. Weatherbie had one really good season (1996) led by Chris McCoy with OC Paul Johnson helping the offense thrive in an Aloha Bowl win over Cal and overall 9 win season (with losses to Notre Dame, Army, and Boston College).
Paul Johnson left after that year taking over as the head coach of Georgia Southern and compiling a 62-10 record in 5 years with 2 National Championships. Without Johnson Navy had four straight losing seasons resulting in Weatherbie dismissal. Navy then hired Paul Johnson as their head coach. In his first season we beat SMU 38-7 on the road. The hype was immense. But 10 straight losses followed before we met and destroyed Army 58-12 in the last game of the year. Paul Johnson would follow that season with 5 straight 8 win seasons, 5 straight bowls and 1 10 win season that saw them in the final AP poll. Paul Johnson leaves Navy for Georgia Tech and Navy promotes his OC Ken Niumatalolo to carry the success.
Niumatalolo goes 27-13 in his first three seasons with 3 bowl bids. After a single 5-7 season, Niumatalolo goes 5 straight seasons with at least 8 wins including an 11-2 finish in 2015. Niumatalolo would only exceed 7 wins in 1 more season, ending with back-to-back 8 loss seasons resulting in his replacement. Brian Newberry in his first season went 5-7 while he tries to re-invigorate the program.
Due to the personal connection, Navy is going to be my first rebuild. I will take my dynamic offense to Navy converting them from the option offense. In real-life, due to the military requirement, Navy would not be able to recruit certain players, but in this game I can grab a wide array of talent.
